Softball readies it’s final pitch

Baseball has the World Series, and softball… well it has the Olympics. For now…. It seems hard to believe that four years have flown by since the last time I watched women’s softball. Perhaps even sadder is that after these Olympic games it’ll be gone, maybe forever. Cat Osterman graced our televisions in 2004. Even from Greece many couldn’t keep their eyes off the long legged, cutie out ...

Team USA: Softball (1-0)

Our girls in Beijing won in impressive fashion earlier today with an 11-0 no-hitter against the first year Olympic team of Venezuela. USA starting pitcher, 2004 Gold medalist and now mom, Jennie Finch pitched 4 innings of no-hit ball with 2 walks and then pitcher Monica Abbott closed the door in the 5th without allowing...

U.S.A. Officials Already Working On Inventing More Olympic Sports We Can Dominate

After yet another successful run at this year's Olympic games for sports we invented and play mostly in this country, the United States Olympic Committee is hard at work inventing sports for the next games. With baseball and softball being removed after this Olympics, we are losing two staples of American dominance over sports very few other countries care about. Some countries are sad about...

Japan Defeats US For Olympic Gold
A stunner in softball: The U.S. team, which has dominated the sport since its introduction to the Olympic in 1996, has lost the gold medal game to Japan, 3-1. With the IOC having voted to eliminate softball from the Olympic docket in 2012, it will be at least eight years --and maybe never—until the U.S. can attempt to avenge the loss. Japan scored their insurance run with some assistance ...

REPORTING FROM ... THE LAST OLYMPIC SOFTBALL GAME (FOR NOW)
This is not how it was supposed to end. Sure, with the announcement that softball was being dropped from the 2012 Games, we knew Team USA's gold-medal streak would come to an end—but not like this. Not in its last game, it its last Games, against a Japanese team it had beaten 4-1 just 24 hours earlier and 7-0 earlier this week.
The Crying Game [Olympic Roundup]
Important doings in the Olympics which you slept through again ... So is this the Japanese, softball version of the Miracle On Ice? In the most significant achievement for a Japanese female since O-Ren became head of the Ikuta Clan, Yukiko Ueno scattered five hits to lead Japan over the U.S. 3-1 in the gold medal game. What? (Checks notes). It was the Americans' first loss since 2000 ...
U.S. Softball Loses Gold Medal Game To Japan
Softball is a sport that has been dominated by the United States in it’s short Olympic history. The American team basically shows up every four years, destroys the “competition,” and then goes home with a gold medal. Four years ago in Athens, the Americans outscored their opponents 51-1 en route to yet another gold. Which is why the IOC has decided that 2008 will be ...
Japan Beats U.S., Wins Softball Gold
In one of the biggest upsets in any sport in these Olympics, Japan has defeated the United States 3-1 to win the softball gold medal. The U.S. had won the last three gold medals, had a 22-game winning streak in Olympic softball and was accustomed to not just winning but blowing out its opponents. So dominant was the U.S. that softball games involving the Americans often invoked the mercy ...
20 August: Olympic Baseball & Softball over for Canada
The women put up a solid effort, losing in the medal round to Australia but the men didn't make it that far.  At least the Jays won. The women's softball team finished in 4th with a gutsy effort from Lauren Bay-Regula who threw a complete game but appears to have been left in too long (5 runs allowed has to be one of her worst results).  Still, at least they got that far.  The ...
Olympic Baseball/Softball Beyond 2008
Last night (August 18th, 2008), Bob Costas reported from the NBC studios in Beijing, the IOC’s (International Olympic Committee) reasoning behind the removal of the sports of Baseball and softball from future Olympics (a minimum of the 2012 games in London). Here is what he reported: Baseball According to Costas, the reason why baseball has been nixed [...]
Crystl Bustos: Enormous Softball Talent With a Personality to Match
The best article I've read during the Olympic Games is this one by John Branch of the New York Times , profiling U.S. softball designated hitter Crystl Bustos. If you've seen even a moment of softball highlights, you've probably noticed Bustos, who is listed at 225 pounds, appears to weigh significantly more than that, and packs serious power at the plate. Branch's profile goes much deeper, ...
Can anyone give credit to the US Women's Olympic softball team?
HHR would like to welcome a new writer into the family... "The Cubbie Chaser" grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago and challenges anyone who thinks they've led a more miserable sports-fan experience to a thumb wrestle. Right here, right now. ...Yes, she roots for the Cubs. Born on Opening Day 1978 -- one guess what happened at Wrigley that day-- her heart still aches with the ...
2008 Olympics: Events I Would Like To See
There are 302 or so Olympic events. A few more couldn't hurt. The World Olympic Federation has decided to drop softball from the 2012 Olympic schedule. That fact means that we will need at least one event as a replacement. So here are my suggestions for new Olympic events. 1) Hot dog eating. There is now a world championship featuring athletes from around the globe. The two best eaters in the ...
REPORTING FROM ... BEIJING
S.O.S.—SAVE OUR SOFTBALL Given that we based our whole Olympic preview issue on the premise that The Games are all about the women, we decided to stop by a press conference with people determined to preserve softball as an Olympic sport.
