John Challis, 18, R.I.P.

John Challis has passed away after a valiant battle with liver and lung cancer. The Freedom, Pa., teen died Tuesday afternoon at his family home. The John Challis story started with a base hit in a high school game this year and became nationwide through his courage and a foundation he created to help other teenagers with cancer. Challis’ life was short, but it was full of accomplishment and efforts to be admired. A remarkable young man. Rest in peace and condolences to the Challis family.

John Challis died Tuesday afternoon. If you don't know the name, you probably know his heartbreaking but inspirational story: An 18-year-old living with terminal cancer whose determination and unparalleled spirit stirred intense emotions in others. By now, you've probably seen the sad news that John Challis, the inspiring Pittsburgh-area teenager, lost his battle with cancer Tuesday at age 18. Over the last few months, it's likely that you were touched by Challis and his perspective, even as he was battling a disease that was surely going to take his life. Along the way, he smacked a pinch hit for his high school baseball game, sat in John Russell's managing chair for a day and was chauffeured to Yankee Stadium by a driver named Alex Rodriguez.
