Mike Mulligan: Never mind the cynicism of the media, a press box full of NFL scouts also were looking askew at the Bears following the team's announcement Thursday night that first-round draft pick Chris Williams underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc Wednesday night. A team spokesman said the injury was not a pre-existing condition but a new problem that occurred in the first hour of the team's second practice of training camp, their first in pads.

The Bears announced on Thursday night that rookie tackle Chris Williams, the fourteenth overall pick in the draft, has undergone surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back.
