Odenized +4Could this be the start of a new trend or will the NBA become more similar to the European Leagues? -
ethanator1088 At best the Euro leagues will be seen as a high paying D-league.
They pay good money for Childress? The value of the Euro just went down in my book. :-)
-
picksfarm Good for him, i think this is a wise decisioin, and i also think that many will follow -
PrepChamps I think this could be something to watch. In the very least players could threaten to go overseas to give them an edge in contract negotiations. -
ATS Experts This is something to watch. I feel more bench NBA players will begin to make the transition across the pond for more money and more minutes. There are quite a few young NBA players that have simply not made the transition from the college game to the NBA game. I think that not only NBA players but we could see a few more "daring" high school players head to Europe for the quick cash, play a year or two and enter the NBA draft.
-
ethanator1088 They can have our bench players and we wil take their great players. Sounds good to me. Maybe some of those players will learn how to shoot.-
RedBaron He came off the bench, but J-Chill was the Hawks 2nd-best player, statistically. The guy is Pippen-esque.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3501488 Hey, if all you are in it for is the $$$$, then this is an outstanding idea. Go to Greece, make $20MM tax free. Problem -- it basically ends any chance you may have had of becoming a great NBA player. The Hawks continue to hold your rights when you return and they can match any offer you get. No one in the NBA was willing to offer you a big contract when you were still an NBA player. Do you think that playing in the Greek league for one year will up your market value? If so, by how much? Hawks Lose Depth, Blame the Dollar!

The Hawks have lost a nice young player in Josh Childress. Where did he go? Olympiakos. He's getting $20 million for three years and will stray from being paid in our weak dollar. Maybe my friend Kellex should change the name of his site (The Sports Dollar) to the The Sports Euro. Five guys have gone from the best professional basketball league in the NBA, to all parts of the world (Russia, Spain, Greece, etc.). The Euroleague should certainly be happy, their league will benefit from all these guys coming over (don't forget Brandon Jennings!). I will watch as much Euroleague as I can! My question is, right now these teams have an advantage because their curriencies are ...

Well, it looks like he wasn't bluffing.
ESPN is reporting that Josh Childress has agreed to terms with Olympiakos to become the first, as far as I know, US-born NBA player in the prime of his career to turn down a guaranteed long term NBA contract in order to play in Europe.
We discussed some of the implications of this trend on a FanPost earlier this week. But let me just say that I'm stunned.
It's a fascinating decision, at once narrow-minded (he wants the most money possible) and open-minded (he's open to living in Europe, experiencing a life other than the NBA, perhaps blazing a trail for others).

Atlanta had offered him a five-year, $33 million contract. But the Hawks’ slow-paced negotiating tactics and the limits of restricted free agency, combined with what Childress called Wednesday the “opportunity of a lifetime,” resulted in his decision.
