Frank Deford was on NPR this morning talking about how stupid it was to try to compare Michael Phelps to competitors from other sports, and while he obviously has a legitimate point, I can't help but think of Amare Stoudemire when I watch Usain Bolt. It's the irrepressible swagger in the starting blocks, the preternatural cool under pressure, and more than anything, the sheer physical dominance [link]

Some can't help but think of Amare when they watch Bolt
Published 8/21/2008 by J.E. Skeets at Ball Don't Lie
Usain Bolt is an Olympic God. As you no doubt know, the Jamaican breezed to an astounding world-record time of 9.69 seconds in winning 100-metre gold on Saturday, and on Wednesday he followed it up by winning the 200-metre race in a world-record time of 19.30. Dude is so fast you don't even know what he looks like. Well, except for Brown Recluse, Esq. of Free Darko — he sees a lot 'Black Jesus' in young Bolt. Recluse explains: "... I can't help but think of Amare Stoudemire when I watch Usain Bolt. It's the ...

... now she's a modern pentathlete. Can you imagine how much of her adult life she has spent training? And then she gave the New York Times' Jere Longman this delightfully startling quote: "I love cigarettes and gambling. If I didn't do this, I'd be a smoker and a gambler." Interesting thing about Team USA's next opponent, Argentina: They hardly ever play zone defense, and they are the only team in history that has beat an NBA-rich Team USA more than once. Usain Bolt as pre-surgery Amare Stoudemire. Dr. Oliver ...

Are Amare and Usain Bolt alike?

Over at FreeDarko.com they seem to think so. They write a very interesting piece comparing the pre-microfracture surgery Amare Stoudemire and his freak athleticism to the freak athleticism which we are seeing on display at the Olympics from Usain Bolt. For anyone who thinks I’m insulting Bolt–already one of the greatest sprinters of all time–by comparing him to a mere three-time All-Star who’s never advanced past the Western Conference Finals, remember back to the 2005 playoffs. At the age of 22 ...

The Making Guard

If the Jazz are on TV you hear the same comments over and over again: Jerry Sloan has coached a lot, Matt Harpring played football, Duh-ron Williams is an okay point guard, Andrei doesn't like playing in Utah . . . and . . . Utah's Shooting guards suck, not just currently, but historically as well. Sloan doesn't want any more shooting guards, but making guards. Who can fill this need on the Jazz?
