REPORT: GENE UPSHAW DEAD AT 63

A report citing unnamed sources from Clear Channel online indicates that Hall of Fame offensive lineman Gene Upshaw, the long-time Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, has died at the age of 63 . Per the report, Upshaw had been fighting pancreatic cancer. Upshaw’s condition not been publicly known, and it’s unclear whether others at the NFLPA were aware of the illness, which is one of the most serious forms of cancer. Gene Upshaw is the only player in NFL history to play in three Super Bowls in three different decades – in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
He has been Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association since June 1983. Clark Gaines was named by Upshaw as his predecessor earlier in the year.
Upshaw is survived by his wife, Terri, and sons, Justin, Daniel and Eugene Jr.

This is a tremendous shock to the NFL community. Gene Upshaw, former player for the Oakland Raiders and director of the NFL Players Association, has passed. According to multiple sources, Upshaw had long suffered from pancreatic cancer. He did not disclose his illness to the media.
Upshaw presided over the NFL Players Association as director, and helped players gain significant increases in salary and guaranteed money during his tenure. Many have said his relationship with former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue helped to mold the successful ...
