Actually, it was a “forward” of an email she got from an anonymous person in Ontario saying Legein had retired. After a slew of phone calls to sources throughout the NHL, I finally got somebody to tell be off the record that’s it true. I didn’t believe it either, but it’s been confirmed just a few minutes ago by the Blue Jackets. They got a call today from Legein’s agent, Doug Woods, telling them he won’t be at training camp and has decided to hang up his skates. He’ll be 20 years old in three months. He returned to Europe for the 1978-79 season and never played North American pro hockey again. In Europe, where he likely experienced a very different sort of atmosphere, he was a top-notch hockey player. Robin Sadler is one of the few people on planet earth who might understand this story.

... brought this to my attention last night, but it looks like Stefan Legein may or may not be retiring from hockey, at the ripe old age of 20. I'm not sure what the latest is yet on the story but perhaps he's just decided that he would rather do something else with his life. If that's the case, I suppose it wasn't a very easy decision for him to make and I wish him luck. First, Bethany's Hockey Rants breaks the Stefan Legein story; now, Light the Lamp has a very in-depth lunchtime interview with Jackets head coach Ken Hitchcock that covers nearly every facet of the upcoming season.
