Right winger Stefan Legein, the Blue Jackets' second-round pick in 2007 and one of the top up-and-coming agitators, has decided to quit playing hockey. Not joking. I didn't believe it either, but it's been confirmed just a few minutes ago... [link]

Stefan Legein quit Hockey
Published 8/20/2008 by Bethany at Bethany's Hockey Rants
... Stefan Legein has retired.  It was through an e-mail that I found out and didn’t believe it.  I thought I could figure it out and I sent an e-mail off to Aaron Portzline.  I am just shocked, I kind of in a way broke the story, but I do have to credit the anonymous e-mailer today.  I will have more on this tomorrow, I am speechless. ...

... so many different levels. Earlier today, I got an email from a Puck-Rakers reader, Bethany, of Bethany’s Hockey Rants. Actually, it was a “forward” of an email she got from an anonymous person in Ontario saying Legein had retired. After a slew of phone calls to sources throughout the NHL, I finally got somebody to tell be off the record that’s it true. Just a few minutes ago, Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson confirmed it. read on

... Doug Woods, telling them he won’t be at training camp and has decided to hang up his skates. He’ll be 20 years old in three months. This story is shocking on so many different levels. Earlier today, I got an email from a Puck-Rakers reader, Bethany, of Bethany’s Hockey Rants. Actually, it was a “forward” of an email she got from an anonymous person in Ontario saying Legein had retired. Read the entire entry from Puck-rakers here. Obviously this came out of nowhere, as there has been no mention ...

Stefan Legein might be laughing, Pierre Maguire is probably crying

... So out of nowhere, a very legitimate Columbus Blue Jackets prospect, Stefan Legein quit hockey. Like, quit quit. I didn’t believe it either, but it’s been confirmed just a few minutes ago by the Blue Jackets. They got a call today from Legein’s agent, Doug Woods, telling them he won’t be at training camp and has decided to hang up his skates. He’ll be 20 years old in three months. Legein popped in 43 goals in the OHL this year but says he fashions (fashioned?) his game after Sean Avery’s. ...

... to express his interest in playing for the Canadiens. He was assigned to Nova Scotia (AHL) in early March 1978, and collected six points in nine games, but quit the team near the end of the season. He returned to Europe for the 1978-79 season and never played North American pro hockey again. In Europe, where he likely experienced a very different sort of atmosphere, he was a top-notch hockey player. Robin Sadler is one of the few people on planet earth who might understand this story.

Stefan Legein Just Retired ... Or Did He?
Published 8/20/2008 at FanHouse
... The first online report of Legein's retirement came from Aaron Portzline at Puck-Rakers, the Blue Jackets blog at the Columbus Dispatch. But when it came to nailing down the story, Portzline had an assist from a local blogger: ...

Stefan Legein quits; one of the stranger stories of summer begins
Published 8/20/2008 by Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy
... Bethany passes this along to Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch, who called around until Jackets GM Scott Howson confirmed the news. Later in the day, Legein's father tells Portzline that "until Sept. 20 (when training camp starts), he hasn't quit anything." (The ...

... brought this to my attention last night, but it looks like Stefan Legein may or may not be retiring from hockey, at the ripe old age of 20. I'm not sure what the latest is yet on the story but perhaps he's just decided that he would rather do something else with his life. If that's the case, I suppose it wasn't a very easy decision for him to make and I wish him luck. However, knowing Leigein's penchant for spontaneity...hey at least it got us all talking about something in this booooring off season. ...

Stefan Legein UPDATE
Published 8/20/2008 by Bethany at Bethany's Hockey Rants
**First of all, I want to make it very clear that I will not under any circumstances e-mail you the message that I received.  Don’t ask.  Also, just to be clear, the e-mail was never forwarded to Portzline, there was a segment copied and pasted to him.** Second of all, Legein’s father said that: “Until Sept. 20 (when training camp starts), he hasn’t quit anything.” He did confirm, however, that Doug Woods still represents his son as an agent. This story is just beginning.  Stefan is ...

Ken Hitchcock chats with Blue Jackets blogger about new faces, making the playoffs and destroying Nashville
Published 8/21/2008 by Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy
There are major daily newspapers that haven't had the newsworthy week the Columbus Blue Jackets bloggers have had. First, Bethany's Hockey Rants breaks the Stefan Legein story; now, Light the Lamp has a very in-depth lunchtime interview with Jackets head coach Ken Hitchcock that covers nearly every facet of the upcoming season. (Sadly, however, no photo of what Ken Hitchcock looks like while eating lunch.) Much of this will only appeal to Columbus fans and/or fantasy geeks whose ears perk up when they hear Rostislav Klesla and Fedor ...

Portzline gives Bethany credit for receiving the information and forwarding it to him and fortunately we don’t have to listen to another episode of bloggers v. mainstream media UFC edition. ...

Stefan, I hope nothing but the best for you.  I hope you find what you are looking for, and most of all I hope that YOU are happy, because that is what matters.  Your happiness.  That’s it. Also, I have to say a big thank you to Adam Proteau of The Hockey News, Stu Heckel of The New York Times, Puck Daddy, Aaron Portzline, and Kukla (and whoever else gave me credit for this ...
